Best Position to Play Guitar

Much has been discussed amongst guitar players on the best position to play. We see the famous guitarists take different positions: sitting, standing, with the guitar on the abdomen as BB King or almost at the knees as “kids” from Red Hot Chili Peppers.

From experience I’d say that these poses are not at all comfortable, at least at first, while you learn. It is true that these are very “cool” positions, but there will be time for that.

Roughly speaking, the classical guitar is played in a seated position with your left foot on a small bench and the body of the guitar resting on the left thigh effortlessly and the sheet music should be in front of you. Surely you not want the inconvenience of an awkward playing position, right? This position provides access to all the frets and you can play comfortably for a couple of hours together.

The seat (couch or chair) should be comfortable and it’s a good idea to lean over the back. And if you do not have armrests, it’s better. Your performance depends a lot on whether or not you find a comfortable position to play. The part of the headstock should be to your left, depending on whether you are left or right handed. To remember: lefties are in a bit of advantageous position because that is the hand that’s most difficult to move and guitar lessons would be easier for the lefties. However, that does not mean that you would have to change your hand orientation just because you want to play good guitar. It is also very important for you to remember that your seating positions should be such that both of your arms can move freely and the guitar should be able to comfortably rest on your chest without you having to arch your back. Also mind the position of your guitar sheet music stand.

If you want to practice playing guitar for long hours together, it is a good idea to sit in a straight position rather than in a more comfortable bending position because that way you would not have to be the backaches after playing for a couple of hours.
